Spotlight: ANIDOX – What is an XR-exhibition with animated non-fiction?

Viborg Animation Festival is made possible in a collaboration with the city's vibrant creative community, which through the years has contributed to Viborg being recognized as a UNESCO Creative City in Media Arts. This article highlights ANIDOX; they showcase how animation - integrated with modern XR technology - can be used to convey documentary narratives in innovative new ways.

One of the unique experiences at Viborg Animation Festival is ANIDOX, where visitors can experience how animation and cutting-edge XR technology bring documentary storytelling to life in immersive ways. At the ANIDOX:exhibition at Galleri NB, guests put on VR headsets and are immediately immersed in selected works within the genre of animated non-fiction – real-world stories presented through animation.

By getting so up-close and personal with the plot of the stories through VR technology, viewers are offered and entirely other level of engagement, focus, and reflection, expanding how documentary narratives can be experienced.

“The opportunities to experience high-quality VR and XR works are still rare for many. At ANIDOX:XR, visitors can explore internationally acclaimed projects, including works shown at major platforms like the Venice Biennale, in an accessible and welcoming festival setting,” say Michelle Kranot and Uri Kranot, the artist duo behind ANIDOX and the XR exhibition, which can be experienced at Galleri NB during week 37.

In addition to being open to all festival visitors, selected works compete for the ANIDOX:XR Award, presented by an international professional jury. The award is handed out during the VAF Awards.

No prior knowledge or experience with VR technology is required to experience the ANIDOX:VR Exhibition. Just be aware, that pre-booking is necessary due to limited capacity. Tickets can be reserved through the Viborg Animation Festival website in the spring – keep an eye on the programme calendar or sign up for our newsletter for updates.
